STRING PROJECT | LOS ANGELES
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ASG?
The Alternative String Group (ASG) is a new type of experience for young string players. The ASG is comprised of study of contemporary musical genres with improvisation and rhythm exercises in a fun, non-competitive setting.
Is the ASG a youth orchestra?
In the ASG each student gets personal attention and the chance to be a soloist. Think of it more as a jazz or rock band.
Do I need to audition?
No.
How old do I need to be?
ASG students are 13-18 years old with at least two years of instrumental experience.
The new ASG 8-12 ensemble meets at 1pm on Saturdays, and is for students age 8-12.
Do I need to wait until next semester to join or can I sign up at any time?
The ensembles fill up quickly, but there may be openings from time to time throughout the year. Students who can only attend classes which are full may request to be put on the waiting list.
Do I need experience with alternative styles or improvisation?
No previous experience playing in alternative styles or improvising is necessary.
Do I need an electric instrument to participate?
No. ASG rehearsals focus on technique, musicianship, and ensemble playing. Students are welcomed to use their electric instruments and are provided with electric instruments when performing at certain performances.
What is the difference between the Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced ASGs?
Our intermediate and advanced classes are for more experienced improvisers, and are open to new students by audition only.
Beginning and intermediate classes are offered for a range of age and ability levels. All levels are offered in our Culver City Studio.
Call and let us help you find the class that is most appropriate for your child.
How many students are in each class?
The two ASG ensembles are limited to a max of eight students.
How much does it cost?
ASG fees are listed by the type/level of ensemble you enroll in. Pricing is listed on our ASG Registration Form - which can also be found on our STUDENTS page.
When do students perform?
We believe that it is important for young musicians to get to share their music with others as often as possible! We hold a big concert at the end of each semester, and special performances around town are also in the works.
Where are the rehearsals?
Our new Culver City, CA studio is located at:
12804 W. Washington Blvd.
